You might have thought that last week’s story about Cameroon wearing Umbro shirts with adidas shorts and socks was a unique one, but that isn’t the case.
Thirty-one years ago today, the Republic of Ireland beat Brazil 1-0 at Lansdowne Road thanks to a Liam Brady goal.
Jack Charlton’s side were wearing the adidas kit which had been launched the previous year, updated with a new crest (more on that tomorrow).
However, goalkeeper Packie Bonner was in something of a quandary.
He normally wore yellow but obviously that was out against Brazil. In Ireland’s game away to Belgium in 1986, he wore the orange and black ‘dip-dye’ shirt but that seemingly wasn’t available.
Instead, he turned out in a silver shirt, but one made by Umbro – a teamwear style known as the Grobbelaar. The likeliest guess is that it was one he used for training at Celtic, given the similarities to his club jersey at the time.
Three years later, Bonner would again be clad in silver for the greatest moment of his Ireland’s career as he saved Daniel Timofte’s when the World Cup last-16 game with Romania went to a shootout.
Thankfully, on that occasion they had planned ahead and it was an adidas shirt.
Hi..there is a small mistake in german keeper socks 1970, there are 2 red stripes on the socks of Sepp Mayer …. when has a history of the Portuguese jersey ..?
Hello Joaquim, I had thought that too but you can see here that there is just one red stripe https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/world-cup-quarter-final-leon-mexico-england-2-v-west-news-photo/80752438
the socks of Sepp Maier do not have 1stripe but 2, on the photos of the beginning of match the socks are well stretched, whereas during the match they are released and can see the 2 bands.
I work a few times for the site switchimageproject and I had already made the remark of this small detail

Bengt forcera to use an emergency goalkeeper shirt also happened to Wales in 1994. Do you remember it Denis?
Being forced… should be the first two words in my previous post. My phone is using auto correct and is set to Swedish…
Sorry Simon, just saw this now – I don’t recall?
Wales played Norway in a friendly and Neville Southall wasn’t allowed to wear all black as it clashed with the officials. He ended up wearing a shirt borrowed from Cardiff City, complete with club crest and the Cardiff Echo sponsor.
Excellent! And thanks for being quicker with the reply than I was!
