Having worn green shorts and socks during 1989-90, City appeared in white shorts early in the new season – including in friendlies against Everton and Manchester United.

The green shorts re-appeared in the autumn as City embarked on an unbeaten run before white socks became the preferred choice, coinciding with a new set of shirts that had a blockier number style and lost the sleeve logos.

The Fluminense-style change shirt was worn away to Dundalk (who were then forced to borrow it when they came to Cork) and also in a Munster Senior Cup tie against Wilton United.

In January, a red shirt featuring an abstract pattern appeared in the game away to Shamrock Rovers as City lost 4-0, their first league defeat. That was its only competitive outing though it did see game-time in friendlies against Celtic (second half) and Leeds United in the summer of 1991.

By and large, goalkeeper Phil Harrington wore a kit that was essentially identical to the Republic of Ireland one but in the spring of 1991 there was a new black, blue and green jersey – a prototype of the upcoming adidas Equipment range and quite probably the first time the new logo and aggressive branding were seen in an official match.

Going into the final game at home to Dundalk, City were level on points with their visitors. On this occasion, Dundalk remembered to bring their proper away kit and won 1-0 to take the title.
