The new adidas Equipment era was embraced as the same ‘Equipment-B’ style was used for the club’s three kits. Only away to Bayern Munich did they deviate from the classic blue socks while the red shorts appeared in all matches.

Following the racially motivated Rostock-Lichtenhagen riots in August, it was decided that teams would eschew their sponsors’ logos for one round of fixtures, with the slogan “Mein Freund ist Ausländer” (“my friend is a foreigner”) on the front of shirts instead. Oddly, Hamburg appropriated an old adidas design, though not one the club had previously used.

The second season with Uhlsport saw an unusual approach with two shirts that featured a lot of white – while the extra blue on the change kit increased its functionality, another was needed.

Against Arminia Bielefeld and Karlsruhe, a greeny-blue shirt – likely a teamwear design – was used, while against Monaco in the Uefa Cup they wore a blue and black in the Ajax style. This would turn out to be a preview of the 1997-98 offerings.

While red change socks were worn away to Schalke, Hamburg had intended wearing the blue set against Werder Bremen but were forced to don a white set belonging to the home side.

Hamburg’s second and last season with Puma saw them in a design that was popular among the company’s roster, with much of the contrasting colour on the back rather than the front. Hamburg’s shirts were of the batwing cut, featuring an abstract pattern on the left-hand side.

The black shorts on the blue strip differed from the set used with the red shirt as they had blue panelling. Due to an unusual Uefa ruling that prevented opposing teams from having the same sponsor’s logo on their chests, when Hamburg met Arsenal in the Champions League the away sides had ‘Dubai’ instead of ‘Fly Emirates’.
