Arsenal

The departure of Kieran Tierney in the summer meant that, since Mikel Arteta’s appointment in December 2019, every Arsenal player numbered 1-11 had changed. David Raya moving from 22 to 1 meant he became the third goalkeeper to wear 1 during Arteta’s reign while new signings Piero Hincapié and Eberechi Eze have become the third to wear 5 and 10 respectively.

Despite being a right-sided centre-back, Spaniard Cristhian Mosquera has taken 3 – Myles Lewis-Skelly opted to keep 49 due to the special connotations the number has for the club. Apart from Raya, Ethan Nwaneri also changed number, from 53 to 22, while third-goalkeeper Tommy Setford swapped 36 for 35 to accommodate another new signing, Martín Zubimendi.

Aston Villa

Bournemouth

While the Cherries didn’t have any major changes from 2024-25 to 2025-26, there were some alterations just prior to the return to action in the wake of the transfer window closing.

With Chris Mepham having departed, Julio Soler moved from 20 to take the vacant 6, with new loan signing Álex Jiménez taking 20. Another new arrival, Amine Adli, started the season in 17 but was able to move to his favoured 21 when Romain Faivre left on loan.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Burnley

Chelsea

Cole Palmer switched from number 20 to 10 – its previous owner, Mikhaylo Mudryk, was left unallocated, as was the previous number 2, Axel Disasi.

Liam Delap – who wore 48 at Manchester City when Palmer was their number 80 – became the 18th player to wear 9 as a squad number for Chelsea since 1993-94; it had lain vacant for two seasons since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s short stay at the club came to and end.

Everton

The only change of note – beyond goalkeeper Harry Tyrer moving from 53 to 38 – is attacker Beto swapping 14 for 9 in the wake of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s departure.

Jack Grealish, signed on loan from Manchester City, opted for number 18, citing the fact that it had previously been worn for the Toffees by Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney.

Liverpool

Last year’s Liverpool first-team squad featured players with very high numbers who featured regularly – Caoimhín Kelleher (62), Trent Alexander-Arnold (66), Jarell Quansah (78) and Conor Bradley (82) – but the first three have left while Bradley is now number 12.

Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak have the potential to stand alongside classic 7 & 9 partnerships, while new left-back Milos Kerkez has taken 6 – when his fellow Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai played at right-back, Liverpool had a back four of 8-5-4-6.

Manchester City

Rayan Cherki wore 29 in the Club World Cup soon after signing from Olympique Lyonnais but was able to switch to 10 after Jack Grealish joined Everton. Nico O’Reilly shifted from 75 to 33.

Having spent a season and a half out on loan, Kalvin Phillips was re-allocated to number 44 on his return, with his old 4 given to new signing Tijani Reijnders.

Manchester United

Having had number 20 since he joined in 2018, Diogo Dalot switched to 2 in the wake of the departure of Victor Lindelöf. When Diego León signed in the summer, he was initially announced as number 30 but, with Benjamin Šeško requesting that when he joined, the defender moved to 35.

Newcastle United

While the Toon had just two players changing numbers downwards, both were pleasing: with goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka having left for Burnley, Nick Pope switched from 22 to 1 and left-back Lewis Hall swapped 20 for 3, which had been vacant since Paul Dummett’s departure in 2024.

Yoane Wissa, signed from Brentford on transfer-deadline day, became the latest player to take on the mantle of Newcastle’s number 9, which had previously been worn by Callum Wilson.

Tottenham Hotspur

Just the one change among senior first-team players – centre-back Radu Drăgușin switched to 3, the number he wears for Romania, so as to allow João Palhinha, signed on loan from Bayern Munich, could wear his favoured 6.

With Son Heung-min having moved on after a decade wearing 7 for Tottenham, Xavi Simons has inherited the shirt following his arrival from RB Leipzig.

West Ham United

Three West Ham centre-backs changed to single-digit numbers during the summer of 2025 – Max Kilman from 26 to 3, Edson Álvarez from 19 to 4 and Nayef Aguerd from 27 to 5 – but Kilman was the only one to feature from September onwards, with Álvarez joining Fenerbahçe on loan while Aguerd was sold to Marseille.

Youngsters Oliver Scarles and Freddie Potts were given recognition of their growing status with downward moves too while Callum Wilson took the number 9 shirt vacated by Michail Antonio.

Like Antonio, goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański left the club on a free in the summer – however, following the sale of Wes Foderingham in early September, the Poland international returned to London Stadium. With Mads Hermansen having taken Fabiański’s number 1, the old new arrival opted for 22.
