The 1993-94 season is remembered fondly by Galatasaray.
The club reached the group stages of the Champions League, having overcome Manchester United on away goals in the second round, edging Cork City in the first round before that.
Against United and in the group games, the Istanbul club wore a fairly nondescript yellow Umbro shirt with a red wrapover v-neck, however it wasn’t the only yellow kit they wore that season.
While red and yellow almost always feature, with halved shirts the preferred design, Gala have worn the colours in varying styles – take 1995-96 as a random example of the different combinations. Therefore, few eyebrows were raised when a yellow shirt with red chalkstripes in Umbro’s classic early 90s style appeared on October 3, 1993:
Presumably, it was earmarked for wider usage but the game chosen for its debut was the derby against hated rivals Fenerbahçe.
As Graeme Souness would learn a few years later, these games matter more and so, after a 2-0 loss, the kit was blamed for the defeat and never seen again.
Looking over the link with the Gala shirts over the years, you HAVE to do a feature on Galatasaray shirts in the 1990s. At least the Adidas ones and at the very least the über-Adidas template on the white jersey worn from 1997-2000. That one is definitely stradling the line between awesomeness and madness.
