While AC Milan have had more than a few black third kits, red strips are a rarity in modern times. Apart from the 1996-97 fourth kit, the only other one in recent times was the 2001-02 third kit.
It had a similar style to the 2000-02 away strip and the black 2000-01 third it was replacing, as well as the red goalkeeper strip. That custodian’s strip was little-worn; this one would only see action twice and both in friendlies.
The kit was used in pre-season friendlies against Valencia and Deportivo Alavés, but, when Milan went to Udinese in their third league game – seemingly a perfect opportunity to wear it – they wore the home shirts with away white shorts and socks.
Juventus had white shorts and socks that season, so the full Milan home kit afforded plenty distinction between the teams and there were no opportunities to wear the red kit in Europe. Black returned for 2002-03 and red kits haven’t been seen since.
