While Lee is a Tottenham Hotspur fan, this suggestion relates to Rangers, based on a snippet from the new book The Rangers Shirt. Seemingly, in the spring of 1982, with the club’s existing kit deal with Umbro coming to an end, Rangers executives met with Le Coq Sportif about the possibility of the French firm taking over.
As things transpired, a new deal with Umbro was agreed but Lee wondered how things might have been – his request was for a home kit in the style of Sunderland’s unusual double chalkstripes (red socks were in vogue at the time before blue sets were used later in the 1980s, with black not returning until 1992) while the away is based on the Aston Villa home design.
