Celtic’s primary and secondary kits for the 2001-02 season made a good cohesive set when placed alongside each other.

As covered previously, the home strip had, unusually, been launched midway through the previous season, giving a preview of Umbro’s design sensibilities for the coming campaign, while the away bore some similarities to the new Chelsea home outfit.
However, while the Bhoys have very occasionally worn dark shorts with the hoops when required, the mashup in question here does not involve the interchanging of the two main outfield rig-outs, nor the golden yellow third which had been the 2000-01 away.

Instead, we’re looking at the first-choice goalkeeper kit – a style was able to be tailored to the team wearing it by altering the trim colour.

In that instance, Liverpool’s away couldn’t be worn with the main goalkeeper shirt but the shorts and socks were common to both; this instance is kind of the opposite to that.
The black jersey, mainly worn by Rab Douglas, complemented the away when worn together – but each had its own set of black shorts and socks.
The default goalkeeper shorts and socks used were of the same style as the white sets for the main outfield kit but the away sets, with their green-stripe motif, worked just as well.

That was proven in the opening league game of the season at home to St Johnstone, whether by accident or design – or possibly supply-chain delays – Douglas appeared in the most imperceptible of mashups but it seems to have been the exception rather than the rule over the lifespan of the kit.

That reminds me, I recalled Umbro having form in this area with Sheffield United in the 1993/94 season… so when I googled it, my 33 year old memory was correct!
When the Blades played at Coventry on a Sky-broadcasted match, Simon Tracey wore the grey graphic design wornnby most Umbro teams’ goalkeepers that season, but instead of the intended matching shorts, he wore the outfield away shorts – and possibly socks too. United’s away kit that season was navy, with a teal and purple sash, which featured in the goalkeeper jersey design.
