Recently, we shared a 1983-84 adidas Bundesliga catalogue with our Patreon subscribers.
Back then, 12 of 18 teams in the West Germany top flight wore the three stripes with 13 of 20 in 2.Bundesliga – however, there are some clubs in the country that can be bracketed with the likes of Barcelona, Everton, Internazionale and Manchester City in never having worn the three stripes.
Borussia Mönchengladbach are one of those. Die Fohlen have a strong association with Puma, albeit not an exclusive one.
They have also worn kits made by Asics, Kappa, Lotto and Reebok – incidentally, quite a strong case could be made that in 2025-26, Italian side Sassuolo had a better set of green, white and black Puma kits than Mönchengladbach did.
That’s tangential to this, where we examine a what-if scenario of the club in adidas and we have landed on the early-to-mid-1990s sweet spot.

The home kit takes its cues from the contemporary Bayern Munich away, which allows it to serve as a nod to the distinctive 1970s home style, while the striped adidas template of the era serves as the base for the appropriately-coloured change kit.

There will be content here during the World Cup, but for a more regular fix see our Patreon page.
