Today’s request comes from Riccardo Giannini. He had previously asked for a mid-1990s AC Milan adidas set and this is in a similar vein.
In 2015, Manchester United and adidas rejoined forces after a 23-year gap, during which the club had worn Umbro and then Nike.
The switch from the double-diamond to the swoosh took place in 2002 – we don’t recall any other firm being in the mix apart from Nike at the time, but we could be wrong. In any case, Riccardo has asked us to imagine how the Red Devils might have looked if they had gone back to adidas at that time.
As luck would have it, Nike went with traditional colourways for their first offerings (bar the silver trim on the third), the same as adidas provided for United throughout the 1980s. It makes a three-stripe transposition fairly straightforward, with the only addition some extra red on the change shirt.

Very interesting designs. I always felt a bit disappointed with Nike’s kits for United – in my opinion the only classic home kit they produced was the 2006/07 one. It would be a pretty big project, but I’d love to see how things would have turned out if United had stayed with Umbro throughout the 2000’s, particularly into the “Tailored by…” era.
It would be nice to see Boca Juniors in Middlesbrough’s 2008/09 Errea kit, for a future FKF request
Hi, I wondered if you could do a FKF for Premier League seasons 92-3 & 93-4 for Coventry City? I was gutted we had Ribero kits at a time that Umbro were producing some outstanding kits. Could you do an Umbro ‘new contract’ design (rather than the rollover Div1 designs) for 92-3 based on the ribero strip, with a requirement for a third kit that season and an updated away for 93-4 both based on the pony away colours from 94-6?
The temptation would be to look to the Man City kits but I’m sure you’ll use your imagination! GK would also be interesting.
