Today’s request comes from Kitkingdom, on foot of a recent episode of Talking Kit’s Full Kit Rankers.
In the video – discussing Republic of Ireland kits, which you can watch here – the topic of what Tailored by Umbro Celtic or Manchester United might look like was raised. Kitkingdom got in touch with us to suggest basing an FKF around the subject and we were happy to oblige.
We have cheated slightly in that we are treating these as if the respective clubs returned to Umbro and were given ‘classic’ change colours rather than slavishly following what they might have had in the seasons in question: we hope you’ll forgive us.
For Celtic, we went with the 2009-10 season and the first iteration of Tailored by Umbro.
*
The home kit is based on the Manchester City home, keeping things as simple as possible and including a retro oversized shorts number.
*
A traditional yellow and green away takes the black and gold City change strip as its base and the black third with green trim uses the England away style.

For Manchester United, we went with the 2011-12 season.
Basing the home on the Rangers primary kit from that season allows the suggestion that this is paying homage to the 1984-86 United kit.
*
The away was a popular Umbro design that season, albeit less used than the double-coloured chevron – using the latter would have had it too close to the real Rangers third.
*
The United third employs the shadow stripes that were seen on quite a few Umbro strips but, to all intents and purposes, this is a double-diamond version of the 2008-09 Nike United third.
*
That may smack of a lack of imagination but an all-blue United kit does at least have strong heritage, nodding to the 1968 European Cup win.
As always, feedback is welcome, along with requests for future FKFs – comment below or tweet @museumofjerseys.
Man Utd away kit my fave out of those kits, glad you made Utd’s home & away kits fully interchangeable. Shame most of kits these days aren’t meant for mixing&matching and even if that was possible those opportunities aren’t used properly. For example Crystal Palace last season, could’ve had 12 different kit variations between their three kits but only used 5 and never wore any of those kits other than in default shorts 😡.
Yep – I was really looking forward to seeing us pair white shorts with our home strip á la 97/98 – just with better results!
