We’ve done Coventry in adidas in the past, but this offering is more rooted in reality. Let Jamie Leeson take it away:
“I’d heard that adidas approached Coventry to produce a cup final strip, which was refused at some level, but the tracksuits were made by adidas,” he says.
“I often wondered what an adidas cup final kit may have looked like, as well as the following season’s home and away shirts.
There were not a lot of striped teams wearing adidas at the time, but the newly minted European champions Porto were one of those and so their design serves as the basis for the home kit – Coventry wore navy shorts in the cup final, but white were the default that season.
A few blue-clad teams did have 1980s adidas templates named after them – there was a Chelsea and the Netherlands 1988 design was officially called Ipswich. Unfortunately, there was no Coventry but the Everton, with its diagonal brickwork is a suitable shout for the yellow change kit.
