This is the second of four parts of a series requested by reader Ben Newton – see here for last week’s, which focused on Sheffield Wednesday.
Derby County are next up – like the Owls, they had some well-regarded Umbro kits at the time in real life – once a red-heavy change kit was was altered.
*
Sunderland’s away/third kit style of 1989 is the basis for the home while the grey/black/red away strip is based on the Southampton home.
*
Then, the alternative 1991 kits are based on Denmark’s style at the time – not widely known as the 1990 World Cup was the only tournament they missed between 1984 and 1992 – for the home and the Sunderland away for the yellow, blue and red alternative.

As always, feedback is welcome along with requests for future FKFs – comment below or tweet @museumofjerseys.

I’m going to be greedy and make two requests.
I’d love to see an Arsenal home kit in the style of Club America’s 17-18 away kit.
And for a bigger project, I always liked the kits Adidas made for the 2018 World Cup, with the consistent line based graphics across their kits. I always thought it was a shame those designs never made it to their club teams.
It’d be interesting to see some of the World Cup ideas translated across, either to Adidas’ “elite” teams or to a club from the same country (eg. Spain’s design for Real Madrid, Mexico’s kit for Club America, Belgium’s kit for Club Brugge, etc)
Thanks!
Interesting suggestions Thom, I may need to email you to discuss further!
Yeah happy to talk them through.
